The Seep by Chana Porter

Rating: 5 out of 5.
A near future Queer dystopian novella exploring how grief and an alien invasion shape one woman’s experience of the world.

This was an emotional, weird, beautiful, awful fever dream.

Trina is an Indigenous Trans woman married to the center of her universe, Deeba. When a silent alien invasion completely changes the world, creating a utopia and allowing for what seems like immortality, Deeba decides she wants to be born again. Literally. Trina is devastated and devolves into a drunken mess. What she does with her grief is what drives the story. Will she let go of her old ways and succumb to The Seep?

Trina and Deeba’s love felt personal, and Trina’s grief is palpable. Her journey and the oddities and absurdities that follow are hilarious, devastating, and thought-provoking.

Part alien invasion, part dystopian sci-fi, The Seep is a quick, Queer, wonderfully diverse and refreshing read that will stay with me for a long time.
