The Carrow Haunt by Darcy Coates

Rating: 3 out of 5.

While this was sufficiently entertaining to keep me reading til the end, it lacked a certain substance and seemed to throw in implausible situations in order to create a narrative. It got to the point where some language and details were so blatantly silly that I had to overlook them. For example, the main character, Remy continually refers to the other characters as, “my friends” after spending 2 days with people she doesn’t really know. She also feels torn when speculating that these people could be killers, stating she doesn’t want to believe her friends could kill (ya know, people she’s only known for 48 hours). She continually blames herself for deaths that occur, which makes no sense, because she’s just a tour guide for the house.

The whole setup was implausible: random stranger hires tour guide and 6 other people to stay at a haunted house, tour guide refuses any payment and agrees to stay and work for 2 weeks? Remy suffers a cut to her arm and Mark says she shouldn’t go looking for another character because of her arm being cut. And not like, major injury, but a minor cut. This also happens when another character suffers some ghostly scrapes on his arm and is told he shouldn’t do a certain activity.

Not to mention so many inconsistencies i.e.: Remy states Marjorie was squeezing her fingers so hard during a seance that they might break, but afterward complains of a bruised wrist instead. Also, the grammar: “tireder”…I’ll leave it at that.

This novel had a ton of problems, but it was entertaining enough to not DNF it. Unfortunately the ending was a flop and it seems some actions were shoehorned into the story just to create a happy ending. But honestly, I would read Darcy Coates again, despite the myriad flaws. The story was fast paced and entertaining, even if the ending was a let down.

If you like Freida McFadden or Stephanie Meyer you’ll probably enjoy this. Just don’t expect high level verbiage and consistent storytelling.
